Baby Massage

Baby Massage Touch is the first sense to develop, and massaging your baby is a wonderful way to meet their basic need for physical contact and loving touch. Baby massage is an extension of this loving contact between parent and baby teaching specific strokes and techniques for relaxation, to support physical development and to help with specific complaints. Massage can build your confidence in touching, handling and playing with your baby and can help you develop your understanding of your baby.

How can massage benefit your baby?

Massaging your baby has many benefits and can help

  • Increase the closeness and contentment between you and your baby
  • Your baby to feel secure, protected and loved
  • Settle, comfort and relax your baby
  • Relax your baby’s tummy and aid digestion, improving symptoms of colic, wind and irritability
  • Strengthen the immune system and benefit skin and circulation
  • Develop your baby’s strength, flexibility and posture
  • Improve muscle tone and ease areas of stiffness and tension

The best time to introduce massage is in the early weeks and months. Please contact me if you would like some information on introducing your baby to massage at home.

What to expect from Baby Massage Classes

Classes are suitable from about six weeks until babies are mobile. Classes are informal, relaxed supportive and fun and are a great way to meet other mums and babies. Each week we practice a whole body massage routine and we aim to repeat this each week so that you and your baby become familiar and comfortable with it and your baby knows what to expect.

Each class will generally also contain one or more of the following elements:

  • Different ways of holding and settling your baby
  • Simple stretches to help you relax and ease tension
  • Gentle baby exercises to build flexibility and co-ordination.
  • Simple ways for you to play with your baby to encourage them to develop their strength and stamina as they move from lying on their front, through to sitting and standing.
  • Encouraging your baby to breathe deeply, relax, open up and develop good posture.
  • Using nursery rhymes as part of your massage routine, particularly helpful for keeping older babies interested.

Baby massage is beneficial for pre-term babies, babies with delayed development and babies with special needs.  It can be a useful early intervention where a baby is floppy and lacking muscle tone or where a baby’s muscles and joints are stiff.  An individual session might be helpful initially for introducing your baby to massage so that you can receive individual attention and can focus on techniques you can use at home.

Baby Massage ClassesIndividual/Small Group Sessions are a good way to learn massage techniques that can be used for your new born baby and are also a good alternative if class times are don’t suit you  or you would prefer individual or small group tuition.  This is a lovely way for you both to get to know one another, to help your baby become used to being touched and to ease your baby’s transition into their new environment.

Baby massage is a wonderful gift from you to your baby. They won’t be a baby for long so enjoy this special time together.
